“Never give safety a day off” should be the motto of anyone organising a birthday party. The same goes for school or corporate or council events, fetes or festivals. Recently there has been concern in the media about inflatable safety such as with jumping castles and obstacle courses.

AALARA Safety Committee
Our CEO Mark Rubiolo is on the Safety Committee for the Australian Amusement, Leisure and Recreation Association Inc. (AALARA). It’s the peak body for amusement operators in Australia.
One of the Committee’s tasks is to liaise with regulators such as SafeWork NSW to discuss and implement world’s best practice in inflatable safety. Within these discussions is a plan to release a Code of Practice. All amusement operators will be required to comply with the Code of Practice. It will cover compliance with Australian Standards for Inflatables AS3533.4.1. It will also include setup and operational guidelines for the operators and supervisors of events involving inflatables.
Check the Provider’s Insurance
Also don’t take a day off with Public Liability Insurance. This is a major concern for the industry. During Covid a number of insurance providers left the industry. In turn insurance premiums offered by the remaining providers have significantly increased. Mark Rubiolo warns that anyone hiring an inflatable should obtain a copy of the providers insurance policy. Ensure that is for $20m and is from a reputable insurer ie not from a small tax haven! If the inflatables provider is not insured the risk is too great.

Radio 2GB have just announced that Bubbling With Energy Entertainment is a finalist in their “Taking Care of Business” competition.
2GB and the Commonwealth Bank have reached out to businesses to give them a hand to regenerate after the lockdowns of the past 18 months. They called the competition “Taking Care of Business”! You can read about it here.
Like so many small businesses Bubbling With Energy Entertainment struggled with loss of business during the lockdowns. The restrictions on gatherings in homes, schools and companies devastated our normal business model. So, we applied to the Taking Care of Business competition and received a call today announcing that we are a finalist.
Bubbling With Energy Entertainment is so grateful to 2GB and the CBA for this opportunity. With the peak Christmas booking period coming up it gives us a well needed boost. We look forward to providing jumping castles and inflatable water slides for back yard parties. We also expect our Mobile Video Gaming Trailer, Mobile Escape Rooms and Foam Party products will be a hit with families, schools and OOSH centres. Is outdoor play healthy play? A Sydney Morning Herald article titled “How to make lockdown holidays different from lockdown learning?” quotes Professor Garry Fallon from Macquarie University saying its important to differentiate learning from home based activities. Also, according to Australian Institute of Health and Welfare reports our children are literally becoming obese. Why? Because they are not getting enough healthy outdoor play.
The behaviours they cite which influence obesity include:
increased consumption of energy-dense, low-nutrient foods and sugar-sweetened beverages
insufficient physical activity … especially during the pandemic so many junior sports teams games and coaching sessions have been cancelled and play seasons reduced.
increased sedentary activity such as sitting or lying down on the couch.
increased time spent in front of screens including tablets, PC’s and TV’s.
insufficient sleep.
They report that 25% of children aged 2-17 in Australia were overweight or obese in 2017-18. Also, young people aged 15-24 in 2017-18 were more likely to be overweight or obese than those studied in the 1995 and 2005 reports on the same issue. The report is backed up by this article called “Why should my child play outside?”
It’s unclear yet what affects the lockdowns in our major cities will have on these figures. We hope it’s more than just the family dog who is getting lots of outdoor and healthy play (and attention) as parents work from home, and kids are home schooled.
The AIHW Report
In their 2020 report about insufficient physical activity AIHW said “Participating in regular physical activity provides many benefits for physical and mental health at all ages, and can also help manage biomedical risk factors such as high body weight, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Insufficient physical activity is a key risk factor contributing to disease burden in Australia. Given it plays a role in chronic conditions, it is important for Australians to achieve the levels of activity outlined in Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary behaviour guidelines.”
